NEIL SIMON'S much loved flat-share comedy of clashing personalities, The Odd Couple, has rarely been off the world's stages premiering on Broadway in 1965, but its 1985 female version is less well known.

Paul Ginty the owner of Quay Fitness Studio in Ballina, has brought together a number of local business people and interest local community groups in an effort to raise €2,000 for the purchase of an external defibrillator to be located at the Quay in the town. Those on board are The Ice House Boutique Hotel, Judd Ruane (chairman Moy Boat Club), John Keane (Keanes Bar and Grocery), Niamh Ryan (Bella Beauty), Barry Jordan (Spear Design), John Lynott (River Moy Search and Rescue), and Paul Ginty (Quay Fitness).

Manulla were crowned Mayo League masters division one champions on Wednesday night last with a comprehensive win over already relegated Snugboro. The win completed a league double for the Manulla 7’s and Masters sides. Straide and Foxford United follow Snugboro down to division two next season after being beaten by Kiltimagh-Knock United who finished the season in second place.

Barna had a hurling team in 1964 and handball was very popular in the area, but anyone wanting to play football would have togged out for An Spidéal. Local games were played in Sean Lydon’s field along the shorefront, halfway between the church and Barna school. Kevin Curran and Nicholas O’Fegan were the founders of Barna GAA Club in 1965 and they managed to field minor and junior teams that year. Their junior team had the honour of playing the club’s first competitive match on May 30 1965 against a Bohermore selection known as John F Kennedy’s. Kennedy’s won by a point.

Ballyvary Blue Bombers kicked the night off with a nervy 4-3 win over Snugboro in the opening division one contest. Despite opening a healthy lead, the Bombers were left hanging on towards the end as Snugboro almost pulled off a sensational comeback.

Even with only a few minutes to go last Sunday afternoon in Kenny Park and with both sides vying for their first senior title in a long time, and nothing between the sides on the scoreboard, there was a really muted atmosphere in the ground. There was barely a murmur on the packed terraces and the stand was never in any potential danger of being shook to the rafters.
